Illinois law allows non-visa status individuals to obtain a Temporary Visitor Driver’s License (TVDL).

The Secretary of State has a quick guide available to download to your device. This guide provides a list of examples of acceptable documents from the driver services office, required to apply for a driver’s license or TVDL. Persons eligible for a TVDL can obtain an instruction permit that allows them to practice driving before taking their road test. To obtain an instruction permit, the applicant must visit one of the designated facilities of the Secretary of State (Bloomington, Carbondale, Champaign, Chicago North, Chicago West, Des Plaines, Macomb, Central Rockford, Springfield (Dirksen Parkway) and meet the requirements for obtaining a license for the first time.

All TVDL facilities, except Chicago North and Chicago West locations, process TVDL applicants without an appointment. TVDL processing will NOT be available on Saturdays. To make an appointment at Chicago North or Chicago West, visit: https://www.ilsos.gov
